Most vehicle owners don’t know that they hold the key to receiving the right automotive repair!  When you start to notice car problems, how do you know what’s the cause?  When you take your car in for automotive service, does the mechanic just try different repairs on a hit-and-miss basis, hoping one of them will fix the problem?  You may be paying for things that really don’t need fixing.

The key to receiving the best automotive repair done right the first time, it must be diagnosed correctly.  This will help eliminate the extra costs for repairs that were not the real problem.

To help your auto repair technician get headed in the right direction as to where to start looking for problems, these two simple tips are key:

  • Be observant – pay attention to what you see, hear, and feel with what’s happening with your vehicle.   Know your vehicle so that you will notice if you start to feel or hear strange things.
  • Write it down -- Make written notes so that you can describe the symptoms in concise and descriptive terms.  For example, make a note of when the problem occurs, such as when you start the motor, when driving down the highway, or when sitting at a stop light.

Here is a list of some common problem areas that you will want to pay special attention to:

  • brakes (pads, drums, rotors),
  • no-starts (battery, starter, fuel filter, etc)
  • suspension (shocks, axles, alignment, balancing)
  • strange noises (“rattles, ticks, grind, and crunches”)
  • warning lights (check engine light flickers, or stays on)
  • transmission (engine repairs)
  • muffler and exhaust system
  • A/C system/heating unit
  • electrical system (spark plugs, combustion)

Tip to Remember:  You have the key to help your auto repair technician make the correct diagnosis and give you the best automotive repair done right the first time!
